Mars Mars is a fierce red-hot planet and its energy cannot be contained. This energy needs to be released, usually through actions and physical means. Mars helps us take up challenges, fight head on, and win despite the odds, with courage and a competitive spirit. It represents all forms of physical energies, including sexual. This is the planet that commands you to rise up and do something about your life than waiting. It seems that the phrase “actions speak louder than words” was derived keeping Martian energy in mind. Mars certainly helps to start something from scratch and make it into something big, and all due to the spirit and ambition it imbibes in the person. Mars in Indian astrology is synonymous with power. It gives you the drive to win and become the best, be it at work or playfield. However, keep in mind that Mars makes you warrior-like, not war-like. Its energy can be both constructive as well as destructive, depending upon how it is used and where the Mars is placed in a horoscope.

With fire as its element, Mars in Vedic astrology is a masculine planet signifying strength and supremacy. The positive influence of this fiery planet is associated with courage, enthusiasm, activity, youth, vitality, dynamism, confidence, initiation, innovation, and originality. Its negative influence connotes arrogance, ego, anger, stubbornness, selfish temperament, and recklessness. Mars in horoscope can be both positive and malefic depending upon its placement. It can help overcome challenges, topple competition, and win over enemies. On the other hand, its energy can be self-destructive too causing harm, injury, wounds, accidents, and excessive sexual urge to the native.

A well-placed Mars in horoscope can be very positive as it makes the person a saintly fighter. Such a person usually has high values and is a justice loving soul backed by ambition and fearlessness. They have a good control over their aggressive instincts and use it wisely. People having Mars in Ascendant are usually attractive and look younger than their age. Such a person usually has effective administration and leadership skills. On the other hand, an afflicted Mars can make the person timid and fearful and if Mars is too strong in the chart, it can make the person violent and prone to self-destructive aggression. Afflicted Mars can also make the person ambitionless. Such a person may struggle to focus their energies in the right direction. They may also suffer from loss of vitality & stamina, muscular weakness, inflammation, headache, high fever etc. Overall, Martians are short-tempered, love to offer their opinion and win arguments, are quite intellectual and technically sound.

In Vedic astrology, Mars placement is crucial in horoscope matching as it causes Mangal Dosha.

Jupiter Jupiter is the guardian of the thinking person, the ruler of higher intellect, the embodiment of lady luck, and signifies spiritual wisdom. Jupiter represents your ideology in life. And in spiritual terms, it rules over faith, religion, philosophy, and the search for the ultimate truth of life. Jupiter governs your intrinsic curiosity to find the answers, and explore the world in the process, thus foreign travel comes under the domain of this planet. Jupiter in Vedic astrology is considered to be the most benevolent of all planets, thus naturally associated with luck, fortune and wealth. Its benefic presence can turn rags to riches. While Saturn is the teacher, Jupiter is more of a classmate that helps to grow and sees how you flourish and tread on the right path. It is a judge who assures that you do not forget your values in the process. While this benefic planet bestows us with wisdom and wealth, at its worst, it can surrender to lethargy, sloth, and indulgence.

Jupiter is the “Guru”, it takes us from ignorance to the light of wisdom. It represents knowledge, spirituality, religion, higher learning, research, philosophy, optimism, and a lot more. Jupiter in Vedic Astrology is associated with children as well as it is the “Putrakaraka”. Jupiter essentially is about ‘expansion’. It expands the area where it is placed in a horoscope. For example, if it is placed in 11th house of income and gains, it usually expands wealth and prosperity. Jupiter is the karaka of affluence, generosity, righteousness, inherent goodness, and wisdom.

Jupiter in Vedic astrology is known to be a giver, and is the most generous of all planets as it expands without expectations. It’s placement in a chart defines the spiritual views, bent of mind, kind of faith and religion and materialistic standing of a person.

A strong Jupiter is commonly found in the chart of priests, preachers, teachers, religious leaders, judges, and philosophers. When well placed, Jupiter in horoscope indicates success, prosperity, positive attitude, and spiritual inclination, higher sense of justice and equality, and good relation with teachers. Such people are usually well-wishers of the whole community. However, a too strong Jupiter can sometimes lead to an overly optimistic person, thus problems in life and spiritual stagnation.

When Jupiter is weakly placed in a horoscope, it makes the person choose the wrong direction in life. Such a person may not get the blessing of a guardian or his or her teacher may be dishonest or contemptuous to him. People with weak Jupiter generally suffer from lack of concentration, confidence and faith. They have a pessimistic view of life and are too materialistic and spiritually blind. People with weak placement of Jupiter in horoscope often face financial difficulties in life. Circumstances clog their mind to be unaware of spiritual calm. Afflicted Jupiter may also suggest progeny difficulties. Also, it may lead to problems such as obesity, diabetes, and issues related to liver, pancreas, feet and hips.

There are times when you feel why my life is so difficult when I am doing everything right. This is what Saturn is meant to do for you. It is about discipline, difficulties, delay, duties, dealings, and denials at times. It wants you to work hard, put in your best efforts, learn from your mistakes so when you get a taste of success, it still keeps you humble and grounded, despite having a wealth of knowledge. Saturn is thus a strict teacher, who is austere but only for the benefit of the student.

Saturn is about being disciplined, managing your time, meeting deadlines all while keeping the restrictions in mind. Saturn can however not be termed as a negative planet for its positive influence makes riches from rags. But what it asks you to do is stand brave in the toughest tests of time. Saturn also relates itself to elderly, the grace of old age, traditions, conventional approaches, and authority. It rewards you for your perseverance and punishes for short cuts and impatience.

Saturn imposes limitations and sufferings in consequence of our past life karmas, and through these, it helps us recognize our mistakes and weaknesses, adapt, and ultimately take responsibility. Where Saturn is posited in the horoscope defines the area the person may have to struggle in life. Nevertheless, its strength in the horoscope defines whether the person will be strong enough to tackle the hardships or prone to breakdowns.

People with strong Saturn in horoscope are generally hard working, capable of working relentlessly to pursue their goals. Moreover, such people tend to be loyal with a higher sense of duty. They have a disciplined approach in life, are a little serious and strict in nature.

Saturn’s affliction in a horoscope projects one’s inability to face challenges in life. Escapist tendencies of such individuals further aggravate problems as Saturn wants you to work hard. Weak Saturn in horoscope may lead to mental distress, aloofness in character, addictions, and even chronic illnesses in some cases. If you surrender and fall prey to short cuts to evade sufferings, difficulties may intensify.

The best way is to follow a disciplined approach in life and work hard which would gradually lead to purification and the search for the true self in life. People with afflicted Saturn should understand that Saturn is a slow planet so its effects remain for a long time. Once you get past the period of perseverance and hard work, there will be rewards both in spiritual as well as other sense.

Rahu - the dragon's head Rahu is a reference point in the sky, not an actual planet like Sun or Mercury. Despite not having actual physical presence, its impact is deep and powerful. Rahu stands for materialism and mischief. It represents fascination with foreign, travel abroad, technical professions, elderly people, theft, speculation, bad habits, revolutionary tendencies, underworld, and smoke. When Rahu is negative in a horoscope, it causes dissatisfaction, materialistic tendencies, fears, distorted mental makeup and fantasies. Rahu & Ketu are the shadowy planets in Vedic astrology.

Rahu relates to unconscious desires, ambition, pleasures, fear and uncultured behavior. It works much like Saturn and can bring unexpected losses, misfortunes, failure and frustrations in life. This planet is animalistic in nature. It awards the person with worldly comforts, unexpected success, gains, riches, power and strength.

When positioned positively in a horoscope, it gives victory over enemies and opposition too. But the problem is that there is always a sense of dissatisfaction. Rahu makes you never satisfied with your ambitions, gains, success, money and lifestyle. There is an insatiable hunger for more. It drowns the native into unconscious desires, which he is unable to comprehend but relentlessly pursues. This leads to addictions, obsessive behavior, overly ambitious nature, unrealistic expectations and fantasies.

Rahu is strongly associated with occult sciences. Also to the dark side of human character. It is revolutionary in nature, stands against the norms and conventions. It represents the illegal and the dark. The element of foreign also comes into play. Rahu also relates to spiritual energy quite conversely. It gives knowledge of the higher aspects of life, the occult and spiritual. It gives strong intuition and in-depth understanding of psychology.

Ketu - the dragon's tail Ketu in Vedic astrology is a Chhaya Graha, a shadowy planet. On one hand, Ketu relates to Karma, gives the results of the deeds you performed in past life and on the other, it relates to spirituality, liberation, and mastery over occult and mysteries of life. It is the planet of detachment; it takes away things. But there is a deeper meaning to what we have said here. Rahu stands for materialistic tendencies while Ketu is about pure detachment and liberation from the illusionary happiness of life. When negative, Ketu can cause mental disorders, strange tendencies, lunacy, derangement, anxiety, strain, criminal tendencies, and so on.
