Temporary Relationships

In addition to the permanent relationship, we have temporary relationships based on the planetary position in a chart. These temporary (tatkaala) relationships are specific to a chart.

Planets occupying the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th and 12th rasis counted from the rasi occupied by a planet are its temporary friends. Planet occupying other rasis are its temporary enemies.

Example 2: Let us consider Lord Sree Rama’s chart given in Figure 1 and find the temporary friends and temporary enemies of and .

Whenever we refer to a planet being in a friendly house or an inimical house in the rest of this book, we mean the compound relationships. Planets have traditional house aspects that they look at.

So its kind of like when you live in a house, where you look at on your street when you leave every morning… your “line of sight” lets say, is where you also send your energy, ie, you judge and talk to your neighbours.

So some planets look straight across the street, some look diagonal, some look down the street before they cross the road, etc, etc.

Remember to count the House the Planet is In as House 1. Ie, if a planet is in the 5th house then the 7th house aspecting it is the 11th House.

Now the planets are most impactual within a 5 degree window.

So if a planet is at 17 degrees, then it hits a 5 degree window within the other house, so 14.5-19.5 degrees are the most impacted.

So if is at 17 degrees and is aspecting and is at 15 degrees then it gets the full intensity of ’s aspect, but if is at 25 degrees then he receives less intensity of the aspect. The Planets

Western astrologers use the ten major planets (the through Pluto) and often add points: the comet Chiron, the four major asteroids, and so on.

Vedic astrologers primarily use nine points: the and , the planets through , and the 's North Node (called ) and South Node (called ), which are referred to as shadowy planets.

The reason that modern Vedic astrologers often give for continuing to exclude the outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto) is that the system of rulership, so essential to Vedic delineation, becomes disrupted by the addition of more points. Furthermore, the nodes are significators of the kinds of modern things — computers, technology, epidemic diseases, etc. — that Western astrologers use Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto to represent. (Still, a small number of Vedic astrologers are introducing the outer planets into their practice.)

Also unique to Vedic astrology is the assessment of the as a cruel or malefic planet. One can easily imagine that, in a Tropical country like India, the hot and intense would be seen as deleterious. Nevertheless, the also symbolizes, as it does in Western astrology, the core of the soul (or Atman).

When Vedic astrologers ask, "What's your sign?" they expect to be told a person's sign or mansion, not the sign. That's because the is considered to be more important than the in Vedic astrology. In fact, transits are reckoned from the , and the central predictive method of Jyotish is based upon the lunar mansion occupied by the at birth.

METHOD OF CALCULATION OF UPAGRAHAS

Brahat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) enumerated 5 (Five) APRAKASH-GRAHAS, 5 (Five) UPAGRAHAS and 1 (One) PARANAPADA. There are difference of opinion in finding out longitudes of some Upagrahas (like Gulika and Mandi) in Jatak Granths. In this article an attempt has been made to reconcile difference in opinions and find out an acceptable solution. These UPAGRAHAS are very important aids in predictive astrology.
These UPAGRAHAS are divided in three heads:
I. NON-LUMINOUS (APRAKASH ) GRAHAS
(Based on the longitude of SUN at birth or query)
The five APRAKASH GRAHAS namely Dhooma, Vyatipata, Parivesh, Indrachapa and Upaketu (Sikhi) are calculated based on the longitude of the SUN at time of birth or Query. (It may be significant to mention here that the longitude of the SUN always relates to its center).
These GRAHAS are devoid of splendor, are malefic by nature and cause affliction. The method of calculating these NON LUMINIOUS GRAHAS is as under:
1. Longitude of the + 133 deg. 20’ = Dhooma
2. Dhooma + 53 deg. 20’ = Vyatipat
3. Vyatipat + 180 deg. = Parivesha
4. Parivesha + 53 deg. 20’ = Indrachapa
5. Indrachapa + 16 deg. 40’ = UpaKetu
These Aprakash -Grihas are represented by following planets:
(Refer Jatak Parijata chapter II Sloka 6):
1. - Dhooma
2. - (Pata-Vyatipat)
3. - (Parivesha-Paridhi)

II. PRANAPADA
(Based on duration of time elapsed from SUNRISE to Time of Birth – Istha-Kala and longitude of the SUN at SUNRISE)
Convert the Istha Kala in Vighatikas (1 Ghatika = 24 Min., 1 Vighatika =24 Sec.)
The IsthaKala in Vighatikas is divided by 15 and resultant is to be converted in Rashis (Signs), Degrees, minutes etc. and be added to the longitude of the SUN at the time of SUNRISE (UDYA KALAIK SUN). If SUN is in movable sign, the final longitude will straight away yield PRANAPADA. If the SUN is in dual sign, add 120 Degree and if in fixed Sign add 240 degree additionally to get PRANAPADA.
Important Note:
The longitude of the SUN at the time of SUNRISE is to be adopted for calculation of PRANAPADA on the same basis as for calculating Hora, Ghatika or Bhava Lagnas etc.

III UPAGRAHAS
(Based on duration of day and night – Dinman and Ratriman)
The five upagrahas namely Gulika (Mandi), Ardha Prahara, Yamaghantaka, Mritya and Kala are represented by 1/8th part of the day and also of the night. Each duration is eighth part of Daiman or Ratriman, in the case of day or night birth respectively. When these parts are reduced into longitudes, in fact arcs, they represent five upagrahas in Birth or Query charts. In actual practice these Upagrahas are indicated in charts like other planets with specific longitudes. This can be done in three ways:
(i) The degree ascending at the time of starting point of the arc of the upagraha.
(ii) The degree ascending at the time coinciding with the middle point of the arc of the upagraha.
(iii) The degree ascending at the time of end point of the arc of upagraha (This option is not acceptable. The reasons would be explained later in this article).
FIRST STEP

Initially, the following data would be required on the day of Birth or Query to fix the longitudes of the upagrahas:
(1) Which is the day out of seven days viz. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. This order is very important and should always be followed in this order. Each day is represented by its Lord like Sunday by , Monday by and so on upto .
(2) Sunrise and Sunset – This should be related with the coincidence of the center of with horizon. (The same principle is adopted while calculating the longitudes of first set of five Aprakashgrahas and Pranpada). The duration of the day (Daiman) and night (Ratriman) are calculated from sunrise and sunset of the ruling day.
(3) The duration of day and night is to be divided in equal Eight parts. Seven planets represent first seven parts and the eighth part (last part) is not represented by any planet. During day birth, the first part is allotted to the week day lord. The lords of subsequent parts follow in order of weekday’s lords. In case of night birth, Ratriman is divided in equal eight parts. The first part is allotted to the planet ruling the 5th weekday lord counted from the lord of the day in question. The lords of other parts follow the order of lords of weekdays. As an example, in case of birth is on Monday night, first part is allotted to , followed by , , , , and seventh part to . The last part will be lord-less and not represented by any planet.
(4) Upgrahas are represented as indicated below:
(1) Portion of --- KALA
(2) Portion of --- MRITYU
(3) Portion of --- ARDHAPRAHRRA
(4) Portion of --- YAMAGANTAKA
(5) Portion of --- GULIKA (Mandi)
No Upagraha represent the portions of & .Two malafics are allotted two Upagrahas each. represent Dooma and Mirtyu, Gulika and Mandi.
All Jataka Granths agree with this order of allocation of Upagrahas.The different opinions arise on two accounts:
(1) Gulika and Mandi
(2) Methods of finding out the longitudes of these Upagraha
Gulika & Mandi:
Both Gulika and Mandi represent the portion of . In some editions of “BPHS” indicate ‘Namantaram tu tasyaina Mandirilyabhidheeyate’. This means Gulika is also called by the name Mandi. In chapter 25 of BHPS, the effects of Gulika when placed in each Bhava, are indicated separately, but the name “Mandi” is not mentioned even once. This chapter only refers the effects of Gulika. Further “BPHS” clearly mentions that the degree ascending at the time of start of Gulika portion (Gulika-Arambh-Kalestha) will be the longitude of Gulika.
In chapter 4 of ‘BPHS”, the word Mand () and Mandi are mentioned to arrive at the Nisheka when the natal ascendant is known. For calculating Nisheka , Longitude of , Mandi, , Cusps of ascendant, 9th and 10th houses are required. In Vedic Astrology Cusps are always middle point of the Bhavas where the maximum effect of the Bhavas is concentrated. BHPS further says the effect of the Planet would commence on its placement at the initial point of Bhava, maximum in the middle and nil (zero) on the ending moment. According to BHPS, each planet on the sandhi starts giving effect of next Bhava. As such, it appears that ‘BHPS’ gives clear indication that the longitude of Mandi relates to the middle portion of arc represented by , as longitude of , and all the three Bhavas in reference to calculate Nisheka Lagana, are related to center of the planets and Bhavas. Though the editions of “BHPS” available with us do not give any indication as to how longitude of Mandi should be calculated, but in view the above reasons, it looks quite logical to assume that:
1. The Degree ascending at time of start of Gulika portion will be longitude of Gulika. This is clearly mentioned in BPHS. This degree will show the effect of Gulika as this represent initial or beginning of Gulika portion. If we take the longitude of Gulika related to ending portion of Gulika, at this point the effect of Gulika would be nil and the longitude of this point may start giving effect of the next portion which will fall immediately after Gulika portion depending on ruling Day in consideration. On SUNDAY the last portion after the portion of will be lordless and on other week days, this portion will belong to SUN (KALA)
2. The Degree ascending related to the middle point of portion will be longitude of Mandi.


BPHS has not given any indication for calculation of ascending degree of remaining four Upagrahas. One may say, that the same rule should be followed as in the case of Gulika. But two questions may arise, if we argue on this line of thinking:
1.) Instead of Gulika “BPHS” could have easily said that the above rule is applicable for all Upagrahas without adding another Shloka. This may mean Gulika is being differentiated from other four Upagrahas including Mandi.
2.) No indication is available in case of Mandi and other four Upagrahas in ‘BHPS’. This also leads to clear indication that the basis of calculating longitude of Mandi and other four Upagrahas is same. Gulika being of special significance, the rule for finding out its longitude is clearly defined by means of a separate Shloka. As a matter of fact, respective arcs are represented by five Upagrahas. The middle point of the respective arcs will indicate the longitudes of KALA, Mrityua Ardha-prahar, and YamaGantika as also of Mandi for indicating in Birth and Query charts with specific points.
We shall look into the text of other Jatak Granthas in this regard:
Uttar-Kalamrita:
Shlokas 6, 7 and 8 of chapter I of this famous Jatak Granth are related both to Mandi and Gulika.
In Shloka 6, the method is elaborated to correct longitude of Birth Ascendant with the help of Mandi. (BPHS also made use of Mandi to find out Nisheka ascendant in chapter 4.)
In Shloka 7, the method for finding out the longitude of Mandi is explained which is as under-
“On the days, reckoned from Sunday on-wards multiply the Dinman (Length of the day from -rise to -set) respectively by charu (26), Khari (22), Jata (18), Vayu (14), Nata (10), Tanu (6), and Roon (2) and devide the product by khanga (32) and the quotient arrived at in Ghatikas and Pala etc. taken as Istha, to compute Mandi Sphuta (longitude).
If Dinman is 32 Ghatikas, every eighth portion would be of 4 Ghatikas. First portion would end at 4 Ghatikas, IInd on 8 Ghatikas so on and the seventh portion on 28 Ghatikas, last on 30 ghatikas.
In this scheme numbers, 26, 22, 18, 14, 10, 6 and 2 clearly represent middle portion of respective arcs. I don’t know why word Khanga is translated to mean 30 by some translators of Uttara Kalamrita. Kha is 2, Ga is 3. Thus Khang is 23, when this number is reversed, we get the figure of 32.
Uttara-Kalamrita (U.K.) also indicates that Gulika and Mandi both are sons of according to Sage Mandavya.
“UK” says that Gulika is the ending moment of ’s portion (Antyanshho). This is not acceptable to “BPHS”. As discussed in this article, the view of sage Prashar is not only logical but should prevail.
In any case, views of Maha-Rishi will always get precedence over others. It looks, the view of “UK” is on account of some misconception. Let us take an example. On Sunday, Gulika portion would be seventh. If one multiply Dinman by seven and divide by eight, the resultant should be ending moment of that portion. In many Jatak Granthas this method is given for calculating Upagrahas. We, therefore, safely assume that this view of ‘UK’ is on account of some misunderstanding, which may have crept up in Jatak Granthas on account of wrong method of calculation.
Phal Deepka:
In chapter 25, the same method for calculating Mandi and other four Upagraha is given as adopted by “UK” for calculating the longitude of Mandi. Phal-Deepka says that Dinman should be multiplied 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22 and 26 in case of Mandi and other Upagraha according to lord of the day. But this Grantha does not specify the figure by which the above Product should be divided to arrive at the quotient. Most of the Translators have again assumed this figure as 30, which does not seem logical. Phal-Deepka does not give any clear-cut guidance in this matter.
If Phal-Deepka is read with Uttara-Kalamrita, the scheme is clear. The longitude of Mandi and other four Upagrahas will relate to the middle point of their respective portions.
In Phal-Deepka, no distinction has been made in Mandi and Gulika. As such, where ever Gulika is mentioned in Phal-Deepka it should be taken to mean as Mandi (Phal-Deepka does not seem to refer Gulika, which is defined in “BPHS” or ”UK” as separate Upagrahas, though both are sons of ).
Sarwarth Chintamani :
This Granth refers both Gulika and Mandi. It also accepts the view that both are the sons of . It has defined these UpaGrahas as under:
Gulika: Gulika and sanisuta are names for an Upagraha called Gulika who is the son of .
Mandi: Mandi, Yamatmaja, Pranahara and Atipapi are the names for Mandi. represents Yama.
Sarwarth Chintamani is also considering Mandi as more fearsome, loathsome and dreaded than Gulika.
Gulika is like poison. As soon as any point of the nativity comes in contact with Gulika, it gets poisoned, diseased and intoxicated; whereas, Mandi, as clear from the above description, is destroyer of all Karma Phala. Thus Mandi is called PRANAHARA and ATIPAPI.
According to ‘BPHS’, Gulika is the initial point of the arc, obviously Mandi will be represented by middle point of the arc. where maximum malefic influence would be concentrated.
Sarwarth Chintamani has distinguished both of them separately but has not given any guidance for calculating Gulika and Mandi.
Prasna-Marg :
In Shlokas 14, 15 and 16 in chapter 5, the procedure to calculate the longitude of Gulika is given. But this method is similar which leads to calculating Mandi in Utra-Kalamrita and Phal-Deepka. Dr. B. V. Raman in his translation of these Shloka’s has mentioned:
“But so far as our author is concerned he seems to have accepted both Gulika and Mandi as the same ‘Planets and consequently Gulika’s position so far as this book is concerned should be obtained according to the method given for Mandi.”
Dr. B.V. Raman has given very important observation for our guidance.
Gulika and Mandi have been very freely used in most of the Jatak Granthas. Prasan Marg and Phal Deepika refer only Mandi. The word Gulika, whenever is referred in these two classical books always means Mandi. BPHS, Uttar-Kalamrita and Sarwartha Chintamani make distinction between Gulika and Mandi.
The tables are given below for calculation of Upagrahas.
Calculation of Upagrahas:
The day or night is divided in eight equal parts. During the day, the seven portions are distributed to the seven planets commencing from the lord of the weekday. The eighth (last) portion is Lord Less. During the night, the first portion would commence from the lord of 5th week Lord. The eighth (last) portion is again lordless. The degree ascending on start of ’s portion is called Gulika. The degree ascending at the middle point of ’s portion is called Mandi..Simlarly, middle point of ’s portion is Kala, ’s portion is Mirtya, ’s portion is Yamaghantaka and ’s portion is Ardha-Prahara.
No Upagraha are assigned to the portion of and . The longitudes can be calculated with help of the following three tables:

Ancient Astrologers assumed Upgrahas of Planets. These Upgrahas are not used normally for predictive purposes however; Mandi or Gulika (Upgrah of ) is used by few Astrologers for predictions. Planets and their Upgrahas and their positions are tabulated below:

If the days and nights are not equal to 30 ghatis then the rise of the Upgrah is proportionately changed.

Upgrah = Position of Upgrah on the day x Dinman/Ratriman / 30 Ghatis

For example if the birth of Native has taken place on Monday in then daytime and duration of day (Dinman) is 25 ghatis then the position of Mandi will be :
Mandi = 25 x 22 ÷ 30 = 18.33 ghati or 18ghati 19pal 48 vipal

Mandi will be in the Sign rising at 18ghati 19 pal 48 vipal on the day.
Similarly Longitude of other Upgrahas can be calculated..
