Time is a relativistic concept. One day in the life of Gods is equivalent to one year in the life of human beings. We have various relativistic times taught in Manu Smriti that we can use to see the experiences of soul. We know that Sun finishes one cycle across the zodiac in one human year. If we take that time to be equivalent of one divine day or 3 divine days etc, we can understand various experiences of atman (Sun stands for atman or soul). We can progress Sun by one unit in various divisional charts to see the experiences of soul in the area related to that divisional chart.

For example, each dasama is 3 degrees. Experience of soul in this life begins at birth. We start with birthchart and progress Sun by 3 degrees (one dasamsa) in each human year and this gives the experiences of soul in the area of karma (actions in society). If we progress Sun by 3.3333 degrees (one navamsa) in each human year, it gives the experiences of soul in the area of dharma. We can use one siddhamsa (1.25 degrees) per year to see the experiences of soul in the area of knowledge. We can use one vimsamsa (1.5 degrees) per year to see the experiences of soul in the area of upasana (religious worship activities).

When we say "per year" above, we mean the standard solar year used in rasi dasas. Time of human beings is also measured in terms of Sun's motion. Time of human beings is measured in terms of the motion of Sun as our naked eye (or a telescope) perceives. Time scales to be used when analyzing the experiences of soul in various areas of life are different as already mentioned.

EXAMPLE 1: Let us say someone was born in 1961 with Sun at 24Sc45. Suppose we are looking at a day in 1993 with Sun at 24Le45. Suppose we need the progressed position of Sun using Siddhamsa (D-24) and Dasamsa (D-10).

Let us see how many human years have passed since birth. When Sun reaches 24Sc45 in 1993, it will be exactly 1993-1961=32 years. But we are taking a day when Sun is at 24Le45. This is 90 degrees (3 months or 0.25 year) earlier. So the exact human years passed are 32-0.25=31.75.

If we use Sidhamsa progression of Sun, Sun progresses by one siddhamsa=30/24 deg=1.25 deg per human year. So the progression amount is 31.75x1.25 = 39.6875 degrees = 39 deg 41.25 min. Adding this to the natal position (24Sc45), we get 4 deg 26' 15" in Cp. We find the date and time when Sun reached this position in January 1962 and take the positions of all the planets. These positions are the progressed positions based on siddhamsa progression. Though the native is living in 1993 with Sun having moved by more than 31 cycles across the zodiac, the experiences of the soul in the matter of learning are influenced by the positions on Jan 17, 1962.

Using dasamsa progression of Sun, progression amount in 31.75 years = 31.75x3 = 95.25 degrees = 95 deg 15 min. Adding this to the birth position of Sun, we get 0Pi0. Sun is at that position on March 14, 1962 after birth. Though the native is living in 1993 with Sun having moved by more than 31 cycles across the zodiac, the experiences of the soul in the matter of karma are influenced by the positions on March 14, 1962.

Using the progression of interest, find the progressed position of Sun for the required day & time and find the day & time after birth when Sun was physically at the progressed position. Find the physical positions of all the planets on that date & time. This chart is called the progressed chart.

EXAMPLE 2: Consider the following natal chart

Time: 17:48:20
Time Zone: 5:30:00 (East of GMT)
Longitude: 81 E 12' 00"
Latitude: 16 N 15' 00"

Let us find the native's progressed chart based on dasamsa on October 7, 2000 at 10:39:24 pm (IST). You can see that the Tajaka monthly chart of the 7th month of the year 2000-01 starts at the time mentioned. So 30.5 years have passed since birth. Using dasamsa (3 deg) per year, progression amount is 30.5x3=91.5 deg. Natal Sun on April 4, 1970 is at 20 Pi 52' 33.73". Adding 91.5 deg, we get 22 Ge 22' 33.73". We find out the date & time when Sun entered this position roughly after 91.5 days from birth. The data of the progressed chart is given below:

You can feed this data into JHLite and find the planetary positions. That will be the progressed chart for October 7, 2000 at 10:39:24 pm (using dasamsa progression).

Sun shows atman (soul) and Moon shows manas (mind). Those two are the most important planets in progressed charts. Sun and Moon in a progressed chart show the soul and the mind having an experience in a relativistic time space. Soul has no emotions, no happiness and no sorrow. It only has experiences. But mind has experiences, emotions, happiness and sorrow. When progressed Sun and Moon touch important natal positions or trines from them, important experiences come to the soul and the mind. By important natal positions, we mean natal planets, natal sahams, natal padas etc. A few practical examples may clarify this better.

EXAMPLE 3: Let us guess when the native of example 2 got married.
is roughly at 21 deg in Pi. The key positions related to marriage are 7th house, 7th lord, upapada and upapada lord. Here the 7th lord is around 10 deg in Li and upapada is also in Li. 's progression in Li or trines is a good candidate. Of these, progression in Ge comes at the right age. Let us see when progressed is around 10 deg in Ge (trine to ). Let us take 's navamsa progression to see the experience of soul in the matter of dharma.

has to progress by 9 deg in Pi + 60 deg in Ar & Ta + 10 deg in Ge. The required progression amount is 79 degrees. At the rate of 3.3333 deg per year, this is 79x3/10=23.7 years. So we can expect marriage marriage in the 24th year.
The native got married on the night of August 1, 1993 (24th year!). The progressed chart has at 8Ge36 and at 9Aq34. In the natal chart, 7th lord is at 9Li45. Both and are in trines to this in the progressed chart!

EXAMPLE 4: Let us guess one important period in which the native started reciting a mantra.

The 5th house shows one's devotion and bhakti. However bhakti and devotion live inside oneself and they relate to the true self. They cannot be seen or felt by the rest of the world. The world perceives one's bhakti based on the mantras one recites and the rituals one performs. So mantra pada (arudha of 5th) shows the manifestation and maya related to devotion. For recital of mantras, it is the most important factor.

The 5th house is in Cp and 5th lord is in Ar. So mantra pada (A5) is in Ar. is the lord of A5 and he occupies A5! So is an important planet for mantras. Being in 8th, he shows dedicated and disciplined sadhana of mantras. In D-20 also, he is in the 5th house and aspects A5.

is at 26 deg 40 min in Aries. So the progression amount needed is 9+26.6=35.66 deg. Using vimsamsa progression (1.5 deg per year), this corresponds to 35.66/1.5=23.8 years. After 23.8 years from birth, vimsamsa-progressed touches natal . We can expect the soul to experience something related to disciplined sadhana of a mantra (8th house, A5 and A5 lord) at an age of 23 years 9-10 months.

On 28th Jan 1994, The native started reading goddess Lakshmi's 108 names 108 times on Fridays.

EXAMPLE 5: Let us take A.B. Vajpayee.

Longitude: 78 E 10' 00"
Latitude: 26 N 13' 00"

He became India's PM in March 1998. There was some turbulence initially and he suffered a setback in April 1999 and won again in October 1999. After some physical troubles, he started enjoying his power in late 2000. There was a marked change in his spirits after the surgery. Let us see if it makes sense based on dasamsa progression.

Let us take the chart for Dec 25 2000, i.e. after 74 years. Progression in 74 years is 74x3=222 deg. Natal is at 9 Sg 35' 55". Adding 222 deg (i.e. 7 signs and 12 deg), we get 21 Cn 35' 55".

If you search for the natal positions near this, you will find GL (ghati lagna - seat of power and authority in a chart) at 21 Cn 25! In Oct-Dec 2000, progressed (as per dasamsa progression) exactly touched natal GL! So he may have started truly enjoying power then.

Of course, even in the few years surrounding this, progressed has contact with GL and the native will have some power.

EXAMPLE 6: Let us take a native with the following birthdata and consider his dasamsa progression.

Latitude: 18 N 58' 00"

In the natal chart, several planets are maha yogadas. Of all the planets, is Kevala Maha Yogada and the most powerful yoga giver. So when progressed touches a trine from himself, we can expect great power. A progression amount of 120 degrees (exact trine) corresponds to 120/3=40 years. So, around the age of 40 years, we can expect great power!

This is Rajiv Gandhi's chart. In October 1984, he suddenly became India's Prime Minister when his mother was assassinated.

EXAMPLE 7: [This analysis is directly from Sanjay.]

Consider the native in example 2 again. Consider dasamsa progression of . activates natal at an age of 8.1 years (distance between natal and is 24.2 deg and 24.2/3=8.1).

The 2nd house shows eyesight. The trines from a house show its prosperity. In particular, the 9th house from a house shows its protection (dharmo rakshati rakshitah). So the 10th house and its lord are the protectors of eyes. Here is the 10th lord and he is in infancy. He is afflicted by debilitated 6th lord and this shows problem in eyesight due to weak muscles ( shows muscles). in a fiery sign shows aalochaka pitta too. Basically is the main troublemaker for eyesight. In fact, eyesight problems started in dasa.

's progression over activated karma that resulted in poor eyesight. At an age of 8, the native used to read books without proper lighting and his eyesight weakened.

2. Definition of Time

Time is defined as the linear progression of the state of being, divided into various cycles and sub-cycles. The utility of some of these cycles, or progressions, will be demonstrated in this lecture.

3. Progressions of Time for Human Beings – One year of human life is the equivalent of 1 day of the gods – Manu Smriti


The Sun’s movement demarcates the movement of time. In the course of his regular transit the Sun moves through twelve signs of the zodiac in one year, and thus one sign of the zodiac in one month, and one degree per day. A year is thus defined as a Samvatsara, or the time taken for the Sun to transit 360 zodiacal degrees.
The Sun’s movement at 1 degree per day is equivalent to 1 year of time, based on the above principle from Manu Smriti.. This principle is the basis of all progression and dashas systems in Vedic astrology.
The Sun’s movement at this rate to the end of the first Naksatra Paryaya indicates the end of life for human beings. The year 120 (the full life span of humans) is reached at one degree per year progression

4. The 27 naksatras form the background of all predictive systems in Vedic astrology

The 27 Nakstras are grouped into three of nine each:

First group: Aswini to the end of Aslesha (9th star): Janma Paryaya
Second group: Magha (10th star) to the end of Jyeshta (18th star: Karma Paryaya; and
Third group: Moola (19th star) to the end of Revati (27th star): Adhana Paryaya

The junction point between each group, or last Navamsa of water signs, and first Navamsa of fire signs, are Gandanta and indicate death.

When the Sun, measured by various progression sequences, reaches the Gandanta point, then death – both symbolically as well as factually – occurs.

5. Dwadasamsa Progressions – 2˚ 30’ per year

There are 12 signs of the zodiac, while the division of a sign into 12 subsequent parts is the basis of the Dwadasamsa chart.
Progressing the at a rate of one Dwadasamsa (2˚ 30’) per year, one full trek of the zodiac is the equivalent of 144 years. This is the fullest possible life term of any chart.
All the planets can be progressed at the same rate, including the ascendant/descendant and /IC axes
Progressing at this rate, the first Gandanta is achieved at age 48; the 2nd at age 96; and the final one at age 144. At age 30, all the planets progressed at this rate will form an exact inconjunct to all the natal planets.
Since the full Paramayus of the Dwadasamsa progression equals 144 years, it is more appropriate for inanimate charts such as countries or corporations, as human beings are allotted 120 years maximum longevity in the current age.
5. Progression of One Navamsa per year (3˚20’) – Brighu Nadi

This is the most important of all progression sequences and is emphasized in Brighu Nadi, as well as Deva Keralam
At the rate of 3˚20’ per year from 0˚ Aries to the first Gandanta, 36 years has passed. This is the average term of longevity for humans, and thus this rate of progression is the most natural and appropriate for Jataka, or human charts
At age 27, the ascendant/descendant axis progressed at the rate of 3˚20’ per year comes to an exact 90˚ angle to its natal position. At age 27, the first major turning point in life occurs and significant events happen

6. Progression Guidelines

Progression of malefics to the lagna (3˚20’ = 1 year), or brings great sufferings and challenges
Progression of benefics to lagna, or bring fortune and benefits
Progressing from 0˚ Aries to natal planets, angles, nodes, Sahams, and special points brings about significant events
Progressions of all vargas (divisions) may be made at the rate of 1 division = 1 year of time. In this lecture we shall demonstrate the 1 degree = 1 year (also called Solar Arc progression), as well as 1 Navamsa = 1 year sequences. One year = one sign in each varga chart for progressions of respective divisions

7. Vargottamamsas and Pushkara Navamsas

Students should try to memorize the Navamsa divisions for each of the 12 signs of the zodiac. The following table will be helpful initially:

Vargottamamsa of the ascendant, , as well as other planets, greatly increases the strength and potential of the horoscope.
The first Navamsa of cardinal signs is vargottama; the 5th Navamsa of fixed signs; and the 9th Navamsa of dual signs are vargottama.
Pushkara Navamsas

Planets in Pushkara Navamsa are highly beneficial and strong, in the opinion of Brighu Nadi, and equal or greater in importance as vargottama planets.
Each sign has two Pushkara Navamsas, 24 in all, and each ruled by a benefic planet.
Out of 24, three Pushkara Navamsas are vargottama: Taurus Navamsa in Taurus rasi; Cancer Navamsa in Cancer rasi; and Sagittarius Navamsa in Sagittarius rasi.
If a planet is in Pushkara Navamsa which, however, falls in a sign equal to the 6th, 8th or 12th house of the Rasi chart, then the good affects become nil.

For example, if for a Libra rising chart, were in the 10th house in Cancer and in Virgo Navamsa (Pushkara Navamsa), such would fall in the 12th house of the rasi chart, and thus ineffective. Another example: If in a Leo rising chart, were in 7˚ Taurus in the rasi chart, and thus in Pisces Pushkara Navamsa, its affect would become nil as Pisces is the 8th house of the Rasi chart.

Specific Pushkara degrees (Pushkara bhagas) in the different signs are highly auspicious, and should be used in Prashna charts and particularly for fixing the lagna of Muhurta charts. The Pushkara Navamsas, specific Pushkara divisions, and Pushkara Bhagas are given as follows.

Transits of Planets in Pushkara Navamsas


Beneficial transits through the signs/houses of the rasi chart become exceedingly beneficial during the times when such planets move through Pushkara Navamsas.
Similarly, effects of malefic transits such as Ashtama, or Sade-Sati, will be modified during times of their transits in Pushkara Navamsas.
Of special importance are the transits of dasa/bhukti lords through beneficial Navamsas and especially Pushkara Navamsas.
8. The 64th Navamsa


The 64th Navamsa is found exactly 8 signs, or exactly 210 away from either the ascendant or Navamsa. For example, if the ascendant is 2˚ of Libra, the 64th Navamsa is 2˚ Taurus. Similarly, if the were at 14˚ Scorpio, then the 64th Navamsa therefrom falls in 14˚ of Gemini. These fall in the 4th house from the or lagna in the Navamsa chart.

The 64th Navamsa, as well as the 22nd Drekkana (exactly 8 signs away from the Rising Drekkana, or 8th house of the Drekkana chart) are called Khara, and are very malefic points in the horoscope if conjoined or aspected by malefics, either natally or in transit.

Very challenging events occur to a person when malefics , or / transit in the 64th Navamsa, either from the lagna, , or other significator planets. For example, if is in the 64th Navamsa from the , one may lose his mother; or when in the 64th Navamsa from , one loses his spouse, etc.
Progressions (especially 3˚20” = 1 year) of natal , , or ascendant lord to the 64th Navamsa from malefics, can bring tragedy or danger; or, malefics placed in the 64th Navamsa from these or other significators, will bring danger when progressed to the natal ascendant, , or . The results will be especially significant when the Dasa/bhukti periods of the same planets are in progress.
Benefics transiting in the 64th Navamsa, or progressed to the 64th Navamsa from a significator planet, will bring beneficial results pertaining to such planets such as marriage ( or Darakaraka), birth of children ( or Putrakaraka), rise in position, etc.
or ’s transit over the Navamsa of either , or its trine positions, brings death or health challenges to the father or other male relative, as well as to the native. The same will occur when or transits in similar Navamsa positions from the , or to brothers or sisters when the similar transits to the Navamsa of occur. Navamsa Transits directly to the sign of significators can bring death to the person(s) indicated by such planets in the native’s life.

’s transit (in the rasi chart) over the Navamsa dispositor of the 8th lord, or its trines, brings death or serious health challenges to the native.

ü ’s transit over the Arudha of the 8th house (Mrityupada), or its trines, or in its 7th or trines therefrom, brings death to the native.

The mean motion of slower moving planets in a Navamsa (3˚20’ arc) are as follows:

Brighu Bindu

The Brighu Bindu is the degree midpoint of the and , and is a very important point in delineation. The BB is mention in the Kala Nadi, as well as Brighu Nadi. Midpoints of and other planets, or of and the planets, will also carry great significance so far as the nature of those planets is concerned.

Benefic and malefic transits to the BB will bring dramatic corresponding events into the life of the native. The trine positions of the BB are also sensitive points, as are the 64th Navamsas from them.

Progressions to the BB points, or its trine and opposition point, will bring specific events into the native’s life for good or ill, depending on the benefic/malefic nature of planets or points being progressed.

For specific timings of events with respect to the BB point, the progressed Midheaven/IC axis may be noted carefully.
Find the sign of the BB point, and make this the first year of life (age 0 to 1). Then progress this one sign per year. When the year representing the progressed sign comes to a natal yoga (for good or ill), then in that year significant events occur. Make note of the conjunctions and aspects to the sign for a given year, as well as transits that may be occurring to it simultaneously.

Transits of planets to the BB point (including the midpoints of / and other planets in addition to the ) will be especially significant during dasa/bhukti periods of the nodes, or during their bhukti periods within the planet forming the midpoint.

For example, transits to the 64th Navamsa from the / midpoint, or progressions of benefics/malefics to the BB point or its Navamsa, will be very significant during the Maha-dasha of the , and bhukti period of , or vice versa.

Dashas and bhukti periods of planets in the naksatra of /, or x-planets/, will also tend to bring significant events and experiences.

Mrityu Bhaga

Specific degrees for each of the nine grahas including Mandi bring death when activated by malefic transits and/or dasha periods. The signs and MB degrees differ for each of the planets and are shown in the table which follows.

Note which planets, if any, are in MB degrees in the natal chart. Then, note the progression of that planet to natural malefics, especially , , and . These are the times when the native will fall into danger, and very possibly he will die at such times if the term of longevity has arrived. Also watch the progression of natural malefics to the MB degree.

The 64th Navamsa from the planet in its MB degree should be watched very closely when the dasa/bhukti of that planet is in operation, and when malefics transit to that Navamsa.

Here I am taking up the VEDIC PROGRESSION Method for the Prediction for India on the Independence chart . This is based on Bhrigu Samhita and Nadi Granthas and so called Pitra Jatakam. Here we will be discussing about the application of Daily Progression Yearly Horoscope (DPYH) in Mundane Astrology. Interested readers can also apply this technique in their own chart as it is equally very good when used in Horary.

Secondary progressions Also called A-day-for-a-year progression , Major progression and Secondary direction. This progression involves moving the natal chart forward one day for each completed year of a person’s life. So for example, a person born on May 2, 1984 would have a progressed chart for May 2, 2009 drawn up based on the position of the planets on May 27, 1984 (i.e. 25 days for 25 years). The patterns formed 25 days after the person’s birth are considered to be symbolic of the person’s 26th year of life, and indicate potential tendencies and trends for the year. Secondary progressions are considered by the majority of astrologers to be the most important form of progression.

Let us take up the India Independence Chart and analyse it on the 15th Aug. 2011. Now since India has completed 64 years of independence , according to the above Secondary Progression method adding 64 days for 64 years to make the Progression chart, the date thus arrived is 18th Oct. 1947 00:01 hrs. THIS CHART WILL BE MADE FOR THE 65TH YEAR RUNNING.

SUN is totally AFFLICTED showing concern for the Legislation and the black money 4th house affairs , SUN as per DPYH is the 6th house of the natal chart where the 8th and 11th Lord is placed . The 10th Lord SATURN of the natal chart is also afflicted in the DPYH by Debilitated MARS . Both 10th Lords of the natal and the DPYH are together in and afflicting each other . Here it shows a serious concern for the 4th house , 10th house, 5th house , 8th house and the 11th house. From this it is obvious of the present movement of Anna for the Legislation for LokPal Bill. Also CANCER sign is afflicted and having Debilitated MARS and SATURN. RESULT shows Accidents, Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Floods , Land Slides and Fire accidents. Since the year started on the 15th August 2011, we will be taking the events after this date . 7th SEPT. 2011 BOMB BLAST AND EARTHQUAKE The Dasha was SUN-RAHU-MARS. MD SUN was in the 4th house of the natal chart with VENUS and MERCURY. Afflicted as per the DPYH and also with VENUS and MERCURY there . Afflicted Planets in DPYH causing a concern in TRANSIT also. The MD SUN is in PAC with these planets, we have already explained above its affliction and debilitation in DPYH .

KETU is placed over RAHU .

AD RAHU is placed over KETU in the natal chart and also in the DPYH chart, activating the 1/7 axis from in the natal chart and also in the DPYH along with Deb. MOON of the DPYH.

PD MARS , whos is afflicted badly in DPYH and is afflicting the 4th Lord of natal chart who is also debilitated in DPYH, is placed in the 12th house from MOON in DPYH and is placed in the 8th house from DPYH MOON and over MARS in the natal chart , MARS is also influencing the 2nd and the 3rd house from DPYH MOON. Hence Terrorist activities Earthquakes Accidents . MARS and SATURN were also afflicting each other in transit as they are also afflicted in the of DPYH .

In TRANSIT JUPITER was in exact degrees of MARS of DPYH 16 degrees 13 minutes and was also Retrograde and in the house of MARS.

Extremely Bad . will be in Vish Ghati at 7 Degrees 46 minutes 40 seconds to 8 degrees 40 minutes in cancer MARS will be in MRITYU BHAG 6 degrees 53 minutes 20 seconds on the 20th SEPT 2011 after 19:10 hrs Bad . At the time of the Earthquake yesterday in Sikkam , was over the Progressed chart at 5 degrees 38 minutes difference of only 1 degree from the Asc degree . is East direction . Also the shifted in Virgo and was in Vish ghati at the time of the Earth quake was 1 degree 14 minutes and is in Vish Ghati from 0 degree 40 minutes to 1 degree 33 minutes 20 seconds in Virgo. We can put it here in clear words . Problems to the King,Chief Executive of the nation,Prime Minister, nation Honour and the Employment situations may become bad . Since the 12th house from in DPYH is afflicted and also the 12th Lord of D1 is afflicted here, it brings Crime, Spying,Terrorism, Earthquake( Cancer sign is also afflicted in DPYH) trouble in Prisons and Hospitals, since SUN is also afflicted here not favourable for Bureaucracy.
