Planetary aspects in Vedic Astrology – how they work

One of the many differences between western astrology and Vedic astrology lies in the small matter of aspects between planets. The first thing to bear in mind is that in the Vedic system only certain planets can cast a specific aspect. Not only that but in Vedic astrology the aspect has no orb – or rather, the orb is 30°, because the aspect is cast to the whole width of the house, and not just to any planet that resides in the house.

Next, even if no planet resides in the house, the aspect is still valid, because the aspects are cast to the houses. For example, let’s say that resides in the 1st house. By opposition is aspecting the 7th house, regardless of whether or not a planet resides there. The 7th house will feel the restrictive, heavy hand of one way or another.

Moving on to the planets themselves, the four so-called personal planets – , , and cast only the conjunction and opposition;

, and the Nodes also cast the conjunction and opposition. In addition however, , the greater benefic, casts the trine; casts the forward (i.e., in the direction of the signs) square (4th aspect) and the forward quincunx ( 6th/8th aspect ); casts the forward sextile ( 3rd aspect) and the backward square (10th aspect). Last but never least the north node – like – casts the trine.

Now a word about the strength of each aspect. The , , and utilise 100% of their strength and energy to cast the conjunction and opposition (7th) aspect.

Additionally:-
MARS = 100% strength on the house 4th and 8th from it’s position; 25% on the house 7th from him.
JUPITER = 100% strength on the houses 5th and 9th from him; 50% 0n the house 7th from him.
SATURN = 100% strength on the houses 3rd and 10th from him; 75% on the house 7th from him.
NORTH NODE/RAHU = 100% on the 5th and 9th from him; 75% on the house 7th from him.
Also, the north node () sends a special aspect with 100% strength called purva paapa, which means “past evil deeds”. This aspect is thrown to the 12th house from his position, although bear in mind that always travels retrograde, so the aspect will be to the house it tenanted previous to the one it currently occupies, e.g., to the 4th if currently in the 3rd, to the 7th if currently in the 6th etc.
SOUTH NODE/KETU casts no aspects to planets but casts trines with 100% strength to houses 5 and 9 from his place.

Forming Aspects In Eastern Charts

Aspects in Eastern charts are different than the aspects generally used in Western astrology. For one thing in Vedic astrology both signs and planets make aspects. Planetary aspects are called graha drishti and sign aspects are called rasi drishti.

Let’s deal first with planetary aspects or Graha drishti. Graha means ‘the power to grab’ hence, the planets have the power to grab us and influence our lives. Throughout this article the western names of the planets will be used, however the Sanskrit transliteration for each planet will be in brackets.

Although it is not initially necessary for a student to learn the Sanskrit names of the planets or anything else, doing so is wise.

Planetary Aspects (Graha drishti)

Planetary aspects (graha drishti) show the existence of a desire. The rules around these aspects are: every planet aspects the house it is in and the house directly opposite it. Three planets have special aspects and these planets are (Kuja), (), (Sani), North Node () and South Node (). As the special aspects are described remember that the house the planet is sitting in is always counted as the 1st house.

(Kuja) has the general aspects plus it aspects the 4th house from it and the 8th house from it. So it can be said that (Kuja) aspects 4 places: the house it is in, the 4th from it, the 7th and 8th from it also.

() has the general aspects plus it aspects the 5th and 9th houses from it. Therefore () too aspects 4 places, the house it is in, the 5th from it, the 7th and 9th from it also.

(Sani) has the general aspects plus it aspects the 3rd and 10th from it as well.

North Node () makes the same aspects as (Sani) and the South Node () makes the same aspects as (Kuja).

 Shad Bala - Planetary war      

A special correction is made for the case when two Grahas are in extreme closeness to each other. In such a case, the brighter one will dominate, and gain extra strength from the lesser bright one. To accurately calculate which Graha appeared brighter, advanced Astronomical understanding of the conditions of the Grahas at the time of birth are required. Since we do not have a reliable and clear method available, we will not get into more detail about this.

There is planetary war if , , , and are together (within one degree from each other), is the conqueror whether he is in North or South, but amongst the other four only one, who is in the North, is the conqueror and that in the South is considered defeated in the planetary war. Chapter 1, Shl.105. A planet is victorious in war when it has in comparison more northern declination and has brilliant rays (i.e. are away from the ). Graha and Bhava Balas - B.V.Raman (p.61)    
76. Yuddha Bala. - Two planets are said to be in Yuddha or fight when they are in conjunction and the distance between them is less than one degree. All the planets except Ravi and may enter into war. The conquering is the one whose longitude is less.

There are four kinds of war:
Bheda (occultation, cleaving),
Ullekha (grazing),
Amsumardana (clashing of the rays)
and Apasavya (passing southward).      

When two planets appear to have a single orb on account of their apparent over-lapping, the fight is called Bheda.
In this the orb of the lower planet obstructs completely the upper one.    
When the rims of the two orbs graze each other, it is called Ullekha.    
When the rays of two planets situated closely appear to be clashing with one another, it is Amsumardana.    
When a planet covering another moves towards the south, it is Apasavya.      
A planet is said to be defeated when it is situated to the South of the other, is rough, quivering, retreating without actually coming in contact with the other, small, mounted upon, of unnatural appearance, without brilliance and colorless.
A planet possessed of characteristics contrary to those mentioned above should be considered as victorious i.e. when it is large, glossy and brilliant, even though it may be placed in the south.

Chapter 7 Shloka 18. When there is contact of the stars, it is styled "depiction" (Ullekha); when there is separation, "division" (bheda);    
19. An encounter (yuddha) is called "ray-obliteration" (amsuvimarda) when there is a mutual mingling of rays: when the interval is less then a degree, the encounter is named "dexter" (apasavya) - if, in this case, one be faint (anu).    
20. If the interval be more than a degree, it is "conjunction" (samagama), if both are endowed with power (bala).
One that is vanquished (jita) in a dexter encounter (apasavya yuddha), one that is covered, faint (anu), destitute of brilliance.

and are known in Indian astrology as the ‘shadow planets’ and they indicate the consequences in a planet in which they are conjoined together. If there is no planet that lies in conjunction with and , they may bring about results of the planets that exert influence on them.

Dual Nature of Determining the Results for and

In case and are neither conjoined with a planet, nor have any other planet exerting its influence on them, there may be two kinds of consequences:

Firstly, the results may be bestowed of the lord of the constellation in which the planet is positioned; or
Alternately, the results of the sign may be exerted

This is the reason as to why it is imperative to include the results of and as positioned in a certain house, along with the results of the lords of the constellation.

Nature of the Result

The nature of the results based on the position of and may be dual in their aspect. There are two options:

If the lord of the constellation is a benefic one, the result is likely to be advantageous
If the lord of the planet or constellation the aspecting or conjoining sign happens to be a malefic one, the result is likely to be undesirable

Overview of the Results Given by and

The characteristic of and is that they generate enhanced results than what is usually offered by the lord of the constellation. This is why, it can be imagined that the lord of the constellation is placed in the very house where and were likely to be placed. You may even calculate it as the lord of the constellation being situated in that bhava, as that way, the results are further enhanced.

Example: If a person is born in the Kumbha lagna, their rahu is positioned in the 10th house of the Anuradha constellation. Moreover, let’s say that there is no planet existing in conjunction with it, or even any planet influencing it: if this is the case, is likely to generate the effects of that occupies the 1st and 12thhouses. Other results will stem from the house that is occupied by .

In case of determining the results of , one needs to picture the scene as occupying the constellation of Anuradha, in which case it functions as the agent of or as if itself is present in the Anuradha constellation.

Had the position of been in Jyesta, it would have represented . Hence, one needs to picture it as if is placed in Jyesta and it includes the key components that are signified by the Lord of 5 and 8. This means, one needs to attribute more importance to the matters that are indicated by the bhava that occupies. Hence, one needs to compound the results and then decide on the final verdict of the planets and .
