Nakšatre su sazviježđa.

Dvije nakšatre i jedna četvrtina čine jedan raši. Raši u prijevodu znači znak. Imamo 12 rašija - 12 znakova.Nakšatre se nazivaju i Lunarna prebivališta jer je Mjesecu potrebno približno jedan dan (24 sata) da prođe kroz jednu nakšatru. Mjesec se tako zadrži jedan dan u svakoj nakšatri i za približno mjesec dana obiđe cijeli zodijak. Za to vrijeme, dok Mjesec obiđe cijeli zodijački prsten, pređe približno 30 stupnjeva (jedan stupanj na dan). Tako, taj dio od 30 stupnjeva zodijaka nazivamo raši (znak u zapadnjačkoj terminologiji). Za jednu godinu napravi put od 360 stupnjeva i obiđe cijeli zodijak, odnosno svih 12 zodijačkih znakova. Za to vrijeme Mjesec pređe isti put približno 12 puta (12 mjeseci, 12 znakova).

Nakšatre se iz tog razloga povezuju sa Mjesecom i u čitanju natalnog horoskopa veoma je važna nakšatra u kojoj se nalazi Mjesec. je povezano sa znakovima ili rašijima i krug zodijaka podijeljen u 12 rašija nam govori o karakteristikama kojima vlada .

Lord refers to the Graha that owns this nakshatra. As there are nine Grahas and 27 nakshatras. Each Graha owns 3 nakshatras. As is very well known to all Jyotish students, the 27 nakshatras form the basis of the Vimshottari Dasha system. Maharshi Parashara holds this Dasha system to be the most powerful tool for predicting future trends and events in the life of a person. The sequence in which the nine Grahas rule the 27 nakshatras determines the sequence of the Mahadashas, Antardashas, Pratyantardashas etc. in the life of the person.

The system further implies that the position of Chandra in a certain nakshatra at birth determines that the first Mahadasha in the life of the native is ruled by the Graha that owns the Janma nakshatra. The second period will be ruled by the lord of the next nakshatra, and so on. The figure in brackets behind the Graha indicates the length of its Mahadasha in terms of full years.

Note that the sequence of the Navagrahas (nine planets) repeats itself three times in the same fixed order. Maharshi Parashara provides a certain shloka which is helpful in memorizing the sequence of the Navagraha (Chapter 46, verse 12):

"A-can-ku-ra-gu-sha-bu-ke-shu,"

which stands for:

Aditya (Surya), Chandra, Kuja (Mangal), Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budha, Ketu, Shukra.

The lord of the Janma nakshatra plays an important role in the whole life of the person.
Note that each series of nine nakshatras covers one third or 120° of the Kalapurusha. This means that nakshatras that are posited 120° from each other share the same Graha as their lord. The starting point of each of the three series of nine nakshatras coincides with the starting point of the three fire Rashis, i.e. Mesha, Simha, Dhanu.

GENDER

Regarding the gender of the nakshatras there are slightly different viewpoints, expressed in different textbooks. For the purpose of the charts I made use of the version given in Kalaprakashika (page 77), except in the case of .Rohini, which most authorities declare to be female. Please find here below the classification of the 27 Asterisms in the three genders. Purusha (male), Stri (female) and Napumsaka (neuter). Kalaprakashika translates Napumsaka as hermaphrodite, while more usually one finds it translated as eunuch.

Purusha: Ashvini, Krittika, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Anuradha, Purvabhadrapada, Uttarabhadrapada, Revati
Stri: Bharani, Rohini, Ardra, Ashlesha, Magha, Purvaphalguni, Uttaraphalguni, Chitra, Svati, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Purvashadha, Uttarashadha, Shravana, and Dhanishtha.
Napumsaka: Mrigashira, Shatabhisha, and Moola.

It is remarkable that there are significantly more female nakshatras than male ones. Please also note that the genders given here do not correspond to the ones associated with the species.

DIRECTIONS IN SPACE

It may be of interest to mention that the above party leaders are mentioned in the Devi Bhagavata Purana as four of the so called ashta dik palakas (ashta = eight, dik = zone, direction in space, palaka = guardian) or eight guards posted at eight quarters of space to protect the universe. In the Devi Bhagavata Purana they are described as follows:

On the top of the Sumeru, are situated the world known eight golden cities, subservient to the Brahmapuri, for the eight lokapalas. The Lords of the four directions, east, west ,north and south and of the four corners, north-east, north-west, south-west, south-east, occupy these. The dimensions of each of these eight cities are two thousand yoyanas and a half. In fact, there are nine cities there including the Brahmapuri. Now hear the names of these nine cities in due order. The First is Manovati, the second is Amaravati, the third is Tejovati, next come in order Samyamani, Krishnanjana, Shraddhavati, Gandhavati, and Mahodaya, the ninth is Yashovati. The Lords of the Puris are Brahma, Indra, and Fire and the other dikpalas in due order.(Shrimad Devi Bhagavatam, p.754).

So in summing up we see that around the city of Brahma there are the eight cities of the dikpalakas as follows:

1   On the East is   Amaravati   city of Indra
2   On the South-East is   Tejovati   city of Agni
3   On the South is   Samyamani   city of Yama
4   On the South-West is    Krishnanjana   city of Nirriti
5   On the West is   Shraddhavati   city of Varuna
6   On the North-West is   Gandhavati   city of Vaya
7   On the North is   Mahodaya   city of Kubera
8   On the North-East is   Yashovati   city of Shiva

The names of these guardians of our universe remind us of the presiding devatas of the 28 nakshatras. All guardians, with the exception of Kubera have been assigned lordship of an Asterism (considering Shiva to be identical with Rudra). Are these two 'occupations' somehow related? Seven nakshatra lords are certainly guard of a zone of the universe as well, but when we compare the position in space of a zone, with that of the nakshatra belonging to the same Devata, we find that there exist no correspondence on this level. That is to say, the relative direction in space of a zone, belonging to a certain Devata, does not tally with the relative direction in space of the star belonging to that Devata.

NATURE

The classification of the stars into seven natures (Kalaprakashika, p.112) will be of great interest to all Maharishi Jyotish students. It adds a colourful feather to the joy of verification of our experiences.

These seven natures are as follows: Chara or Chanchala -- moving; Sthira or Dhruva --fixed; Mridu -- mild, or Maitra -- friendly; Vajra or Ugra -- strong, or Krura -- cruel; Laghu -- light, or Kshipra -- fast; Tikshna -- sharp, or Daruna -- harassing; Sadharana or Mishra -- mixed.

These qualities form so much part of the nature of the nakshatras, that they clearly show up in the mode of behaviour of the person of the respective janma nakshatra. If you do find an exception to this rule, then the nature of the Lagna's or Sun's nakshatra will come to your rescue. The following table presents the natures of the 27 stars represented by their sequential number.

Note: some take 3 and 16 to be a mixture of mridu and tikshna (mild and sharp), because 'having something of two opposite properties' is one of the meanings of sadharana (see below). Note that the three 'purva'stars are Ugra while the three 'uttara'stars are Sthira. Those students of Maharishi Jyotish who would like to go deeper into the various meanings and connotations of each of the six natures, will enjoy the list given below, derived from Sir Monier Monier-Williams'Sanskrit Dictionary.


Chara: moving, locomotive (animals as opposed to plants), movable, shaking, unsteady; going, walking, wandering, the wind, the planet Mangal.
char: to move one's self, to go, to walk, to move, to stir, to roam about, to wander, to spread, to be diffused (as fire), to move or travel through, to pervade, to go along, to follow; to behave, to conduct one's self, to act, to be engaged in, to be busy with, to undertake, to practice, to do, to effect, to cause.


Sthira: firm, hard, solid, compact, strong, fixed, immovable, motionless, still, calm, unwavering, steady, durable, stern, relentless, constant, steadfast, resolute, persevering, faithful, trustworthy, firmly resolved, settled, certain.
stha: to stand, to stay, to remain, to continue in any condition or action, persevere in any act, to endure, to last, to be, to exist, to abide by, to adhere to, to stay quiet, to remain stationary, to stop, to halt, to be fixed, to be founded on, to establish, to fond, to build, to strengthen, to confirm, to support, to constitute, to fix, to settle, to determine, to resolve.


Tikshna: sharp, hot, pungent, fiery, acid, harsh, rough, rude, keen, zealous, vehement
tij: to sharpen, to excite, to stir up.


Mridu: soft, delicate, tender, pliant, mild, gentle, weak, feeble, moderate, slow, name for Shani.
mrid: to be gracious, favourable, to pardon, to spare, to treat kindly, to make happy, to rejoice, to delight in.


Vajra: hard, mighty, impenetrable, adamantine, thunderbolt, diamond
vaj: to be hard or strong. (=uj)


Ugra: powerful, mighty, strong, huge, formidable, high, noble, fierce, impetuous, ferocious, hot, sharp, name of Rudra.
uj: to be hard or strong. (=vaj)


Kshipra: quick, speedy, swift; springing, flying back with a spring, elastic as a bow.
kship: to throw, cast, send, despatch, to move hastily (with arms or legs), to throw a glance (with the eye), to strike or hit (with a weapon), to put or place anything on or in, to pour on, scatter, fix or attach to, to direct the thoughts upon, to add (in mathematics)


Sadharana: general, universal, having something of opposite properties, occupying a middle position, balancing between two extremes, behaving alike, similar to, equal to, something in common, a common rule, a rule which is generally applicable, a generic property.
sadh: to go straight to any goal, to attain and accomplish, to finish, to advance, to further, to promote, to agree to, to obey, to master, to subdue, to overpower, to win, to win over, to conquer, to establish, to make perfect, to fulfil.

COLOUR

Most of us are familiar with the fact that rashis represent certain colours. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra mentions the colours of eleven of the 12 rashis. (The part of the manuscript containing the colour of Meena seems to have been lost). Other authors sometimes mention other colours for the rashis. The table below gives a summary:



In the same way, the nakshatras have been assigned certain colours. The colour indications for the present charts have been derived from Shubakara (6, p.16) who says that these colours have been cognized by the ancient Maharishis. There is definitely a correspondence between these, and the colours of the rashis mentioned in the older textbooks. For the sake of comparing the colours of nakshatras with those of the rashis, the table below shows which nakshatras overlap which rashis. This is done in the first two columns, the third column gives the colour indications for the Nakshatras mentioned in the charts, while the remaining four columns provide the colours of the Rashis as given by the following source books:

Column 4: Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra by Parashara (1, p.50)
Column 5: Hora Sara by Prityuyashas (19, p.14)
Column 6: Sarvarth Chintamani (Vyankatesh Sharma; Chapter 1, verse 55)
Column 7: Predictive Astrology of the Hindus (by G.K. Ojha; 20, p.57)

Above lists show that there is a definite convergence between the rashi and nakshatra colours. That is to say: nakshatras, overlapping certain rashis, tend to represent the same colours as the rashis do. In some cases however, there is a clear divergence of colour indications, in the case of Punarvasu (lead), Pushya (black-red), and Ashlesha (black-red), who are overlapping Karka rashi, which is generally designated as pink (white red). No textbook mentions even a trace of black in Karka.

Likewise, Dhanishtha (silver grey), Shatabhisha (blue green) and Purvabhadrapada (silver grey) do not tally with the deep brown indication for Kumbha, which they are overlapping. On the other hand Hora Sara labels Kumbha as variegated, while Ojha's indication for Kumbha as 'darkish white' can also be rhymed with the 'silver grey' of Dhanishtha and Purvabhadrapada. While the text of Parashara makes no mention of the colour of Meena, both Saravali (17, p.43) and Sarvatha Chintamani (18, p.32) label it as white, and so does the modern author Ojha (20, p.57). Brihat Jataka (2, p.16) classifies it as 'of the colour of fish'. Hora Sara however labels it as 'deep brown'.

All these indications are not absolutely different from the colours of two overlapping stars: silver grey (Bhadrapada), brown (Revati). The 'purple' of Uttarabhadrapada however brings in a new element.

As there are many more colours on our beautiful earth then the few mentioned for the rashis, we can assume that the list of rashi colours mentions only the most important ones, while many more shades also fall in their domain. The nakshatras, representing a more refined division of the kalapurusha, can provide us with a more variegated colour scheme.
